The Kummissjoni TEAK (Talent, Elenjan, Arti u Kultura) of the Duke of Connaught’s Own Band Club is putting up a Holy Week exhibition at its premises in Valley Road, Birkirkara.

The exhibition includes an Apostles’ table with a number of ‘plates’ made from semolina, rice and coloured pata. There are also a number of statue sets.

There are also a number of symbols related to the passion of Christ, artistic banners and a life-size statue of Christ the Redeemer made by Gozitan artists Michael and Adonai Camilleri Cauchi.

The main highlights are a ‘stained glass’ 1.5-metre diametre plate and a 3.6 metre by 2.5 metre frame, both in semolina, depicting scenes from the passion of Christ. The latter has been created for 18 consecutive years.

The society’s chapel, situated on the first floor, will also be open to the public and will include the Sepulchre.

The exhibition is open until April 20, weekdays from 6 to 9pm, on Saturday and Sunday from 9.30am to noon and from 6 to 9pm, on Maundy Thursday from 6 to 11 pm, on Good Friday from  9 am to 12.30pm and on Easter Saturday from 9.30am to noon.


The Soċjetà Mużikali Santa Katerina V.M. of Żurrieq is holding a concert of sacred music in the church of St Mary in Bubaqra, Żurrieq, today at 7.30pm.

The concert will include a number of funerary marches by maestros Josef Grech, Salvatore Bonaffini, Ricardo Dorado and Frédéric François Chopin, as well as sacred music from Stabat Mater by Gioachino Antonio Rossini, the soundtrack from the Passion of the Christ by John Debney, Joseph Fenech’s Ave Maria,  and You Raise Me Up by Rolf Løvland, among others.

The Cappella Musicale Cæciliana choir, directed by Abraham D’Amato, with the participation of soprano Catherine Farrugia and tenor Charles Vella Zarb, will also take part. The band will be directed by Josef Grech.

Then on Sunday, from 10am, the band will perform a number of funerary marches in Republic Square, Żurrieq.

On Maundy Thursday, the Sezzjoni Żgħażagħ Palmisti will illuminate the same square from 7pm.

Meanwhile between tomorrow and Good Friday, there will be an artistic exhibition at the band club. It will be open tomorrow from 6 to 10 pm, on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to noon and from 6 to 10 pm; on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 to 10pm; on Maundy Thursday from 6pm to midnight and on Good Friday from 9am to noon.


Valletta International Baroque Ensemble, the resident ensemble of the Valletta International Baroque Festival, will perform at St Lawrence parish church, Vittoriosa, tonight. Mater Dolorosa will feature Heinrich Schütz’s Symphonaie Sacrae II and Nicola Logroscino’s Stabat Mater.

VIBE was born out of a need for Malta to have its own ensemble focused on the study and performances of baroque works. The ensemble consists of predominantly Maltese musicians, guided by foreign baroque specialists. It seeks to perform music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods in a historically informed way on original instruments.

Mater Dolorosa will take place at St Lawrence parish church, Vittoriosa, today at 8pm.


Christus – an exhibition of sacred art during the Holy Week is being organised by the Feast Commission of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sanctuary and the Sliema Philharmonic Society at the Sliema Band Club, 34, St Trophimus Street, Sliema.

The exhibition is open from tomorrow until Good Friday.


A Holy Week exhibition, entitled Golgotha, showcasing the Passion of Christ in miniatures created on Ta’ Gieżu statues, is being held at 135, St Dominic Street, Valletta, from Sunday until April 19 from 4pm until 8pm. On Palm Sunday, the exhibition, set up by Deemer Micallef, Dominic Briffa and Adrian Galea, will open from 8am to 1pm and on Good Friday from 7am to noon.


For the 10th consecutive year, the Ċentru 19 ta’ Novembru 1944 will be staging a Good Friday play, entitled Kefa. Apart from the usual narrative of the last few days of Christ before he was crucified, this pageant focuses on Peter, who was later chosen to lead the Church as the first Pope.

Written and directed by Joseph Buhagiar, Kefa will be staged at De la Salle College Theatre in Cottonera on Saturday at 7.30pm and Sunday at 6.30pm.
