Danilo Doncic has resigned as coach of Valletta FC.

The Serbian coach took his decision following the 1-1 draw against Gżira United on Sunday that saw the Malta champions forfeit top spot in the standings to Hibernians.

Doncic, who was not on the bench to lead the team against Gżira United due to health reasons, sent a letter to the Valletta committee yesterday to inform them of his decision.

“I can confirm that I have informed the Valletta FC committee that I have decided to step down from my post as Valletta FC coach,” Doncic, whose contract expires at the end of the season, told the Times of Malta.

“I feel that the team’s results in the last few weeks have been very disappointing and it’s time to move on. I would like to thank the players, coaches and our fans for their support since I took the job at the club and wish Valletta FC every success.”

On his part, Valletta president Victor Sciriha confirmed that Doncic had handed in his resignation but he revealed that the club committee have yet to discuss the Serbian’s resignation.

“The club committee will convene on Thursday to discuss Doncic’s letter of resignation,” the Valletta supremo said.

“The team will be under the responsibility of Gilbert Agius who will prepare the players for our upcoming league commitments.”

Doncic was named as the Valletta FC coach in January 2018 when he replaced fellow Serbian Zoran Popovic.

In his first six months in charge, Doncic helped the Citizens to complete a memorable league and cup double.

This season, Doncic was still on course to emulate that feat as Valletta are just one point adrift of leaders Hibernians with just three matches remaining while they are also in the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy where they face the Paolites next month.

Valletta will play their next league match on Sunday when they face St Andrews at the National Stadium.
