The Valletta Baroque Ensemble (Vibe) will performa concert entitled Mater Dolorosa, featuring music by Heinrich Schütz and Nicola Logroscino, at the collegiate church of St Lawrence, Vittoriosa, on Thursday at 8pm.

This beautiful baroque setting was chosen as a perfect place to perform Schütz’s Symphonaie Sacrae II  and Logroscino’s Stabat Mater. The Vibe is the resident ensemble of the Valletta Baroque Festival.

Kenneth Zammit Tabona, artistic director of the festival, said the setting up of Malta’s only baroque ensemble specifically focused on the study and performance of baroque music, means it can perform music from the baroque period all the year round, not only during the festival.

The ensemble now has several baroque instruments, including three harpsichords, several gambas, a theorbo and three clavichords.

Its musicians are Nadia Debono, Sarah Spiteri, Jacob Portelli, Yavor Genov and Joanne Camilleri. The vocalists joining the ensemble are soprano Gillian Zammit, mezzo-soprano Alessandra Vavasori and bass Albert Buttigieg.

The Vibe concert Mater Dolorosa will be performed at St Lawrence collegiate church, Vittoriosa, on Thursday at 8pm. Tickets may be purchased from teatrumanoel.mt, the Manoel Theatre box office, Valletta, or at the concert venue.
