Ġnien Lippu Sammut in Birkirkara has been inaugurated, funded to the tune of €700,000 from the Development Planning Fund.

The garden got new paving, a lighting system, a safety railing, decorative and practical furniture such as benches as well as a reservoir for rainwater catchment.

Inaugurating the garden, Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg underlined the importance for residents to have more open spaces where they can disconnect from their everyday life.

He reminded those present that several communities are currently benefitting from projects thanks to the same fund. Last February, more than €3 million were distributed to 16 local councils who signed the contracts for their projects.

Dr Borg said the government is committed to continue helping councils by financing projects for communities, as well as through other works.

Birkirkara mayor Joanne Debono Grech said the garden was named after Lippu Sammut who had brought the great bell up in Saint Helen’s Basilica.

She explained how Mr Sammut deserves this honour for the contribution he always gave to Birkirkara.
