The 14th meeting of the season which was held yesterday afternoon at the Marsa Racetrack consisted of ten races all for trotters.

Two of these races were heats from the Mediterranean Championship in which drivers from Malta, France, Italy, Romania, Algeria, Russia and Serbia drove trotters from class Bronze and Silver on a short distance of 2140m. Malta was represented by Noel Baldacchino who won both heats and tallied 24 points.

Yesterday’s meeting was really an exciting one as it also heralded the start of the prestigious BOV Tazza l-Kbira competition for class Premier trotters. Six heats were organised from this championship on a long distance of 2640m and 24 horses managed to make it for the semifinal stage.

In the first class Bronze international heat, Chahuteur (Noel Baldacchino) was unchallenged during the 2140m distance. This French trotter past the finishing post first from Ulysse Royal (Eman Attard) and Tony Boy (Boris Kecenovic – Serbia). Altesse Atout (Victor Burulev – Russia) finished in fourth place.

In the class Silver heat, Noel Baldacchino led all the way whilst driving American Doneisdone. This American trotter registered its second win of the year after staving off the challenge of Big Finish (Rodney Gatt). Apollon De Suce (Martin Cormy – France) and Midnight Passion (Victor Burulev – Russia) followed home in that order.

At the end of these heats, MRC Media Officer, Lorraine Cunningham presented Noel Baldacchino and the owners of the winning horses with a commemorative memento. Baldacchino finished first with Russian Victor Burulev second and French Martin Cormy third.

In the first class Premier heat, the early leader, Until Oaks (Noel Baldacchino), was outsmarted by the winner Glenn Boko (Rodney Gatt) and Boys Going In (Andrew Farrugia) in the final straight.

For Glenn Boko this was its third win in a row.

There was a close finish between the early leader Paparazzi (Mark Bonnici) and Ungaro d’Eva (Cliferty Calleja) in the second class Premier heat. It was the latter which sealed its first win in Malta.

In the third heat, French newcomer Un Carless Blue (Noel Baldacchino), which took the lead with a lap to go, was overtaken by favourite Up And Go (Rodney Gatt) midway through the final straight.

Tip Chip (Clint Vassallo) ended in third place. For Up And Go this was its fourth win in a row an din Malta.

Cailin Borg put Lincoln Lawyer infront with a lap to go during the fourth class Premier heat.

This American trotter sealed its second win in Malta from Un Amour Du Pont (Andrew Farrugia) and Cadabra Tooma (Jesmar Gafa’).

In the fifth heat it was French Axel Tilly (Julian Farrugia) which led all the way and took its first win on the islands from Tallien (Melvin Farrugia) and Amour Du Loup (Michael Ellul).

In the sixth and last heat it was Uttingeois (Joseph Verbeech) which obtained its second win in Malta after dashing strongly from the outside with 500m to go.

Upman (Noel Baldacchino), Urido d’Alban (Mario Fenech) and Uno Dancer (Rodney Gatt) were the last horses to make it for the next stage.
