On March 18, businessman Maurice Mizzi presented a €70,000 donation to The Spiro Mizzi Foundation. The event took place during Celebration Day at Santa Margerita Primary School in Senglea and was joined by guests of honour, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and MP Glenn Bedingfield.

The foundation is an NGO set up by Chev. Mizzi over 10 years ago to help support children from the Cottonera region academically with the goal of one day seeing them graduate from University. The foundation was named after Chev. Mizzi’s late father, Spiridone Mizzi, who was born in Cospicua.

During the event, Chev. Mizzi pointed out that the foundation needed more financial support from third parties, as his donations alone did not meet the demands of all the children in the area. These donations are being invested into more classrooms, teachers, running costs, computers, books, uniforms, restoration works and new projects to encourage the children’s creativity.

Communities benefitting from the support of The Spiro Mizzi Foundation include Santa Margerita Primary School (Senglea), St George’s Band Club (Cospicua), Catechism Centre, St Lawrence’s parish (Vittoriosa) and Sagrada Familia (Cottonera).

Those wishing to make a donation to the foundation can send a donation to HSBC account 43015130001. One can also purchase Chev. Mizzi’s CD for €10 or purchase the book The Pleasures of Gardening in the Maltese Islands, found at Agenda bookshops for €50. All proceeds from the CD and book will go directly to the foundation.
