According to the weather reports, rainfall fell practically equally throughout the island. Consequently, all the island’s inhabitants were subjected to the constant rainfall on Wednesday, March 27.

Driving in Malta has, for some time now, become a nightmare because nothing is being done by Infrastructure Malta. The roads, even which are in a drivable condition, tend to accumulate rainwater with the consequence that we have large pools of water. In a few words, our roads are a disgrace.

Whenever Infrastructure Malta decides to start rebuilding the roads in Malta and Gozo, not only must they ensure that the foundations are strong and firm, they must also pay great attention where all the water would accumulate and to ways to drain it.

For example, one only has to drive through Gżira to realise that, thanks to the road depressions (which are appearing all over the island), nothing was done to drain the rainwater to the sea, which is just a few metres away. The centre strip resembles one very long pavement, with no drains at all.

While on the subject of roads, some time ago, a good friend of mine rightly suggested that the money collected from contraventions should be used by the local councils to repair roads. This was indeed a good idea. The councils could have been in a position to patch up the roads. It is a costly exercise to resurface roads but I am sure the repairs would have been most welcome.

It is high time the ministry responsible for roads realises the condition of our roads. The deterioration of the surfaces and, now, also foundations has become chronic all over the island.

Would it not be correct if the ministry were to publicly announce its ultimate plan? How long will it take to have a decent percentage of our roads drivable once again?
