As the profile of Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg grows, so does confusion over how to pronounce his surname, which has flummoxed even seasoned journalists.

Thankfully, an associate producer on the ‘Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ has put together a little video breaking the surname down into syllables to show how it should be pronounced.

His version – which will raise a few eyebrows in Malta – is Pete-Boot-Edge-Edge.

The candidate, whose father is Maltese, is not phased by the dilemma, which had dogged him ever since he was elected as the mayor of South Bend Indiana.

“Most people have trouble pronouncing my name so they just call me ‘Mayor Pete’,” he had written back in 2016.
