Jesus would be very upset with Jacqueline Calleja for quoting him out of context. In her letter ‘Tragic circumstances’ (March 20), she used Jesus’s words to suit her purposes. She tried to exonerate Catholic priests who sexually abuse children by quoting Jesus in another context, involving a consenting adult caught in adultery: “Whoever is without sin, let him be the first to throw stones.”

Jesus did not use those words regarding those who scandalise children. What he actually said was: “It is better to tie a millstone around one’s neck and throw oneself into the depth of the sea rather than cause one of these little ones to sin.”
