A Painted Narrative is the title of Sarah Calleja’s debut exhibition, which will be showing at a private space in Balzan.

The exhibition will be open until April 28. Calleja is displaying a series of 40 watercolour works on paper, which have all been executed in the past three years.

Although the artist has participated in various collectives over the years, this is the first time she is going solo. Her artworks, all painted in situ, feature a series of almost haunting land and seascapes captured across various seasons and under different weather conditions.

This collection of works is marked by the artist’s confidence in the medium, which she employs fluidly.

The scenes Calleja depicts, with a sense of quasi nostalgia, are often minimal or abstract; so much so that taken out of context, individual pieces could almost pass for purely non-figurative work. Colour is used sparingly, with her palette chiefly comprising natural often monochromatic tones.

A Painted Narrative will be on show until April 28 at No. 23, Triq LIdmejda, Balzan.
