Haithem Laamouz rewrote Maltese boxing history on Saturday when he defeated Italian Vittorio Parrinello on points to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) Mediterranean title belt at the Corradino Sports Complex.

The ten-round fight turned out to be a tight affair with Laamouz showing the better skills on the night to overcome the challenge of Parrinello, a bronze medallist for Italy in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Laamouz has now become the first Maltese boxer to hold a WBC title belt and this success opens the door for him for bigger fights abroad as well as being included in the world rankings of the WBC.
