Malta, Libya ‘to coordinate’ on search and rescue

The agreement provides that both countries coordinate and support each other for search and rescue operations within their respective search and rescue regions (SRRs), the ministry said in a brief statement.

Simshar widow may keep her home after all

The in-laws who want to evict the grieving widow of Simshar victim Noel Carabott from her family home have no legal title to the property, according to the Parliamentary Secretariat for Land.

Stephania Carabott, who lived in the Marsaxlokk property with her husband for 10 years, has been ordered by a court to vacate the building within four months, which will leave her with no roof over her head.

However, in an unexpected twist, the government’s Property Division yesterday referred to the court case won by the in-laws and said it wanted to clarify the situation, since the property is owned by the Joint Office.

PN and MLP’s reaction to council election results

Independent candidates polled over 58 per cent of first preference votes in Saturday’s local council elections. They won 35 of the 65 seats contested. Of the remaining seats, 27 went to the Nationalist Party, two to the Iklin Residents’ Association and one to Alternattiva Demokratika. The PN obtained 37.8 per cent of the 24,491 valid votes cast, AD 2.5 per cent and the Iklin residents’ Association, 1.6 per cent.

PN leader Eddie Fenech Adami said yesterday that the PN was satisfied with the results. The Labour Party, which is officially not contesting the elections, described the results as the biggest defeat yet for the PN. Since November, the MLP said, nearly 70 per cent of all Malta had had the opportunity to vote at a local council election. And of all the votes cast, the PN had polled a humiliating 42.7 per cent, it said.

The people were agreeing with the MLP’s stand of keeping political parties out of local councils, the MLP said, adding it was ready to start talks with the government on amendments to the Local Councils Act that would enable them  to be run “by citizens for citizens”.

Dr Fenech Adami said the MLP was drawing wrong conclusions as it is not possible to compare the results of local elections with those of national elections.
