The Centre for Arbitration has received 5,591 cases since it was set up in 2000, of which 702 remain pending.

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici said in reply to a parliamentary question by MP Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici that there were 30 voluntary and 299 mandatory cases last year, as well as nine international ones: a total of 338.

During that same period, the centre managed to conclude 20 voluntary cases, 238 mandatory ones, and five international ones.

Analysing the figures since 2000, international cases were the hardest to conclude, with 19 of the 53 received still pending – representing 36 per cent of the total. The most common type of case was referred on a mandatory basis, with 528 of the 5,041 still pending. There were 497 voluntary case of which 155 were still pending.
