Caseres 77

ST ANDREWS 0

Senglea Athletic earned an emphatic 5-0 win over St Andrews, to increase their points’ kitty to 20 points in view of the impending other relegation ‘battles’.

Diego Venancio was the inspiration behind his team’s success as he bagged a hat-trick.

The gusts of wind sweeping across the pitch must have made ball control difficult but Senglea took the lead inside the first ten minutes of play. From a free-kick, Venancio hurled caution to the wind as he bent his shot beyond the wall and away from Matthew Calleja Cremona’s reach.

On 34 minutes, Venancio got on the scoresheet again from a controversial penalty as Kurt Magro was penalised for a foul on Augusto Caseres that appeared suspiciously outside the box.

Buttressed by their two-goal salvo and with the wind now blowing behind their backs, Senglea stayed on the attack after the interval.

Any remaining doubts about Senglea’s victory were dispelled on 51 minutes, when Venancio unleashed a superb shot that left Calleja Cremona hapless with the ball soaring into the corner as the Brazilian completed his hat-trick.

There was only one team in the picture now, despite St Andrews’ attempts to salvage some pride. Not surprisingly, the Yellow-Reds struck again when Leighton Grech got on the end of a swift counter-attack, resisted his marker’s approach before hitting the ball home.

Goal number five came on 77 minutes when Caseres profited from a goalmouth scramble to direct the ball behind Calleja Cremona.

Senglea Athletic's Diego Venancio was voted BOV player of the Match.
