Rachel Fabri’s name is synonymous with musical theatre, and now she gets ready to up the stakes with her participation in Muso Merlot. Adam Brimmer finds out more about the Studio 18 event.

What is Muso Merlot?

Think of it as an annual, unique musical theatre performance. It’s an evening of theatre tunes but what makes it stand out from other typical musical theatre concerts or showcases is that Studio 18 makes it exceptionally accessible to the young and old. It is a bit as though you are attending a pop gig at an easily-accessible venue with a social, ‘bar type’ atmosphere.

How did the name come about?

I believe it was Joe Gatt, the show’s director, and James Azzopardi Meli (who forms part of the Barbetti Quartet and the Studio 18 team) who came up with the name. The original show was held at Bridge Bar in Valletta, which was where the concept of having a glass of wine (or three!) and a few nibbles while casually enjoying some live musical theatre treats came about. And Muso Merlot seemed to have a good ring to it!

What is your role in the event?

I am the vocal coach, and will also be performing.

This is the fourth edition running – what do you believe makes the event popular with audiences?

I think it’s the fact that we always have a diverse, interesting and enjoyable selection of songs and we pick an easily accessible location. The idea of a casual, social atmosphere, where you can enjoy live music while chatting with friends over a glass of wine, is always bound to be appealing. Usually one would need to go to a theatre to enjoy musical theatre...in this case, you don’t!

And how will it be different to the editions before?

This year we have some new guests, as well as the return of the Barbetti Quartet, who will be bringing with them some fresh, new tunes. Jean-Marc Cafa, the creative mind behind Studio 18, will also be taking part – which is quite special, as he usually remains behind the scenes. Apart from this, every year Studio 18 trains a new intake of young people, so there will be some fresh talent to discover.

Who are the main names on this year’s programme?

This year’s programme features Dean Zammit, who trained at ArtsEd in the UK and toured and worked there for many years and who is also the lead singer in Barbetti. Other up-and-coming names include Michela Agius and Remy Azzopardi –  we have a company of 17 singers who are very diverse and multi-talented!

Which pieces/composers should we expect?

Without spoiling too much, one may expect to listen to quite a variety of composers – some well known and some, not so much. These range from Sondheim to Queen, so it’s quite an eclectic selection.

I believe that the event has been described as “an evening of jazzed up musicals”. How do you make sure that the artists give a unique twist to each number?

The pieces are not only worked on musically, and with regards to vocal technique, but they are also worked on from an acting perspective – some end up becoming duets or trios. Some, eventually, immerse themselves into the audience, as audience involvement is always fun. For example, last year we introduced puppetry and a cappella work into the programme. There are a number of  intriguing surprises in store this year too.

What are the biggest challenges bringing an event of this type together?

I think the scheduling of rehearsals is probably the toughest challenge. Everyone has studies, or other jobs, and we actually put this show on with not that many rehearsals. On a personal note, I have to learn a song that is exceptionally fast, and that’s proving quite a challenge in itself, too. Everyone involved has their own personal challenges with their pieces, but I guess when you love what you do it just becomes part and parcel of the fun.

And the greatest satisfaction?

Seeing it all gel together, and the friendships forged through love of musical theatre.

Muso Merlot takes place on March 29 at 8pm at Talbot & Bons, Skyparks, Luqa. Tickets available online.
