Tenishia Thornton placed first in the International Weightlifting Grand Prix in Slovenia this week.

The Grand Prix was held on the International Women’s Day and attracted the participation of weightlifters from around the world.

Infact looking at the entry list included participants from the USA, England, Austria, Germany, Brazil, Cyprus, Denmark, Croatia, Italy, the Netherlands, Nepal, Portugal, Slovenia, Serbia, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Uruguay.

The 13-year-old, who weighed in at 43.35kg, took part in the U-14 girls group and finished with an impressive 49kg snatch and 62kg clean and jerk.

Her 111kg total was equivalent to 191.21 points which was enough to get the gold medal. Thornton finished ahead of weightlifters of Austria and Croatia on the podium.

Thornton broke eight national records in the U-15 category, eight in the U-17 division,and four in the U-20 in the process to establish herself as one of Malta’s most consisten weightlifters.
