ST ANDREWS 0

QORMI 2

Gusman 80

Gnindokponou 90

Two late goals from Tensior Gusman and Fred Gnindokponou ensured Qormi a vital win over fellow relegation strugglers St Andrews at the Hibs Stadium, on Saturday.

Both teams took a cautious approach in the early stages of the game, as they never really threatened each other.

The Saints came close to forge ahead through Degran Jackson, but his free-kick went wide.

Moments later, Jackson was forced to leave the field due to an injury with Aidan Friggieri replacing him.

On minute 41, David Cassar denied Kemar Reid from close-range as both teams entered the dressing room locked in goalless stalemate.

It was not before the 67th minute to see the first noteworthy action of the game - a header from defender Lucas Santana who failed to direct the ball into net.

Moments later, Tensior Gusman almost made St Andrews pay for an indecision at the back when Travis Blasgrove hit a shot into the Qormi player but the ball ricocheted over the bar.

As the half wore on, both coaches introduced new faces to reshape their teams and it was Qormi’s coach Muscat who was repaid with his changes ten minutes from time, when substitute Gusman headed home from point-blank range to capitalise on a Lokando cross.

It was at this point of the game that the Saints staged a serious reaction in an attempt to salvage a point from this game, but despite pushing numbers forward, Qormi’s resilience proved a tough nut to crack.

On the brink of the final whistle, Cassar produced a fantastic save from close-range to deny Blagrove and from the resultant counter-attack, Gnindokponou darted towards the Saints goal before slotting the ball into empty net amid the cheers of the Qormi crowd.

Martin Davis of St Andrews was named BOV Player of the Match.
