GŻIRA UNITED 3

Garba 16, 77

Mengolo 47

SENGLEA ATHLETIC 1

Caseres 45

It was a difficult encounter as predicted but at the end Gżira United managed to find a way to overcome Senglea Athletic’s challenge with a 3-1 victory at the Hibs Stadium, yesterday.

It was an end-to-end first 45 minutes with Senglea, maybe unexpectedly, pushing forward in search of an early lead.

Yet, it was Gżira who launched the first attack on goal when Haruna Garba moved past his markers before firing a long-range shot but Matthew Farrugia was alert to avert the danger.

Senglea’s reply came swiftly after when Augusto Caseres sprinted towards goal before letting go a low drive just to be denied by inches.

Nonetheless, it was the Maroons that broke the deadlock. Garba outpaced Sidqy El Mehdi to slot the ball past Matthew Farrugia for his ninth league goal.

Enzo Potenza’s clan levelled terms just before the half-time whistle. Arian Mrsulja sent an inviting cross inside the eighteen and an unmarked Caseres darted in between the defenders to chalk his seventh goal of the season - his sixth in the last seven games.

After the change of ends, Gżira came out of the blocks recharged and a burst of speed from substitute Mengolo saw him move past Mrsulja and roll the ball into the net to restore the Maroons’ lead.

Garba sealed the win on the 77th minute when Mengolo whipped in a low cross on which the former connected to put his side two goals to the good.

Gżira United's Haruna Garba was named BOV Player of the Match.
