A free screening of the comedy-drama thriller film 2018 Woman at War will be held on March 9, at 5.30pm at St James Cavalier Cinema, Valletta. This is the second in the series of films forming part of European Film Nights, which deal with current issues in the EU. The film won the European Parliament’s Lux prize for 2018.

The film centres on Halla, a choir conductor in her 40s, who single-handedly wants to disrupt the operations of a Rio Tinto aluminium plant in the Icelandic highlands. She repeatedly damages pylons and wires to cut their power supply.

One day, her long-forgotten application to adopt an orphan child from Ukraine is approved. At the same time, the government ramps up police and propaganda efforts in order to catch and discredit her.

The film revolves around her attempts to reconcile her dangerous and illegal activism with the upcoming adoption.

Woman at War will be screened at St James Cavalier Cinema, Valletta, on Saturday at 5.30pm, by Europe Direct Information Centre Valletta, in collaboration with the European Parliament Liaison Office (Malta) and Spazju Kreattiv. The film, certified 15, is in Icelandic with English subtitles. Finger food and refreshments will be served after the screening. Admission is free but booking is required.
