IVF draft law by summer

A Bill on assisted procreation is being drafted by the Bioethics Consultative Committee and should be ready by summer, The Times has learnt.

The Bill is based on recommendations made by Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee in July 2005, Bioethics Consultative Committee chairman Michael Asciak said. “We are using the parliamentary committee’s report as our standard, although the draft law might vary slightly,” he said.

The news comes after Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Agius on Monday urged the government to stop dragging its feet on the issue as it had been doing for too long.

Valletta car park project dropped

The government yesterday decided to scrap plans for an underground car park in St George’s Square, Valletta after the discovery of a network of subterranean passageways.

The discovery was made last week when government employees from the Works Division dug through a wall in a small room in Archbishop Street and found the network of tunnels.

Public transport White Paper: Five organisations against proposed policy

The Public Transport Federation has directed member organisations to hand the identification tag issued by the Public Transport Authority to their respective offices in protest at the policy the government was indicating in the White Paper on public transport.

At an extraordinary meeting yesterday, member organisations declared that neither the federation nor any of its members had been consulted on the White Paper. The five organisations, namely the Public Transport Association, the Mini-Bus Co Op, UBS, WTA and the GBOA, said they completely opposed the policy for public transport.

Postal workers to get arrears

Nearly 1,000 postal workers will be receiving more than Lm324,000 among them in arrears and wage increases after the signing yesterday of a regrading and grade assimilation agreement, backdated to January 1991.

The agreement was reached between the Communications Ministry, the Management and Personnel Office, the Posts Department, the GWU and the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin.

6% wage increase for industrial employees

Agreement was reached yesterday in the Joint Industrial Council on the General Workers’ Union claim for a six per cent increase in the wage of industrial employees on cost of living grounds as from April 1, 1968.

The Government agreed to implement an increase of three per cent with effect from April 1, 1968, and another increase of three per cent with effect from January 1, 1969.

The Government also agreed to reactivate the Committee of Users of the Retail Price Index under the chairmanship of the Principal Government Statistician in order that a household survey may be carried out to served as a basis for the compilation of a New Index.

Truck hits telephone booth: Consultant’s lucky escape

A truck, loaded with stone-slabs, crashed into a telephone booth in Fleur-de-Lys Road, Birkirkara, yesterday morning. It first hit a parked car, mounted the pavement and crashed against the façade of a garage. It was driven by 21-year-old Carmelo Vella of Birkirkara who was uninjured.
