I refer to the full-page article by Charles Xuereb (February 23) entitled ‘75 years of the George Cross on the flag’.  The title is misleading as the article is not only about the GC but is a ranting against anything British in Malta. It is only one of Xuereb’s sporadic attempts over the years to try to convince readers how subjective and impoverished they are to retain such memories.

Surely his diatribe gives the lie to his statement that “The George Cross is a historical honour all Maltese cherish”.  Perhaps Xuereb has renounced Maltese citizenship?

He is also absolutely wrong in stating that we remember our war dead on our flag. Primarily the GC on the flag reminds us of the bravery of the Maltese. That it was the British who honoured us was a fact according to the circumstances. The British stayed in Malta for 180 years. Truly they had many faults as colonialists. Is Xuereb planning to use the June 1919 centenary as a cause to remove the GC?  However, I trust that he agrees that it was a godsend that we were under the British and not under the Fascist/Nazi wings in those terrible war years.

Xuereb’s suggestion, that all British monuments and objects related to the British era (letter boxes and telephone kiosks!) should be gathered and relocated to one museum and in Hastings Garden, is indeed puerile and preposterous.

We are proud of the Maltese flag with the George Cross because it represents much more than our dead parents and grandparents, as Xuereb insists. I hope this sentiment is still alive and I urge readers to voice their concern against Xuereb’s objective.
