BIRKIRKARA             2

Montebello 50

Mifsud 87

ST ANDREWS           0

Birkirkara boosted their chances of securing European football when they eased past St Andrews by two clear goals.

The first half was quite disappointing with shots at goal being few and far in between. The Saints had a good goal-scoring opportunity on 17 minutes.

Kemar Reid released Martin Davis on the right and the latter’s conclusion beat Naumovski but was cleared off the line by a defender.

Four minutes from half-time, Marcelinho’s freekick was blocked, Maurizio Vella took the rebound but his conclusion was partially saved by the Saints goalkeeper with the ball being cleared into safety by a defender.

In the second half, both teams showed greater determination and on 48 minutes, Alex Satariano went close with a cross shot from the right.

However, a minute later, in a fast break for Birkirkara, the ball reached Michael Mifsud who hit wide from an ideal position on the edge of the area.

Birkirkara took the lead on the 50th minute. Alex Satariano failed to clear a cross from the left and Montebello beat Mammadov with a diagonal shot.

Montebello tried his luck once again with a shot from outside the area on 55 minutes but this time his conclusion ended just wide.

On the hour, Naumovski was prominent with a save in two attempts on a Joseph Farrugia free-kick from the right.

A minute later, Reid tested the Macedonian goalkeeper with a low shot from outside the area.

The Saints failed to give up and substitute Aidan Friggieri tried his luck with a rising shot from the right which was parried by Naumovski on 71 minutes.

Birkirkara went close on the 86th minute when off a corner by Clayton Failla from the left, Eduardo Ferreira’s volley ended just wide.

A minute later, the Stripes sealed the issue with a second goal.

Substitute Thiago de Souza advanced on the right before serving Mifsud who hit low past Mammadov.

Substitute Abdulrahman Alsherooqi could have added another for Birkirkara in stoppage time but his close-range header was neutralised by the St Andrews goalkeeper.

Luke Montebello was voted as the BOV Player of the Match.
