The Qarċilla is a traditional farce which goes back a number of years. Most probably, the best known Qarċilla is the one written by Mgr Feliċ Demarco for carnival in 1760.

Apart from the usual political and social satire, this Qarċilla included sexual references and swearing. People awaited eagerly to participate and get involved in the cheering, singing, clapping and even throwing stuff.

Six years ago, the Qarċilla had its rebirth – in 2014 and 2015 by Trevor Zahra, 2016 and 2017 by Immanuel Mifsud, 2018 by Leanne Ellul and this year again by Trevor Zahra. The cast is composed of 12 actors under the direction of Joseph Galea, together with the Tikka Banda, a five-piece brass and percussion band.

Qarċilla is being staged at St John’s Square, Valletta, today at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm and 7pm and tomorrow at 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm and 6pm.
