Malta’s important role and position in world history is unrivalled. I recently travelled from the US to Malta to witness the history and landmarks. There are very few places in the world like Malta where important history has taken place throughout the timeline of human history.

And even fewer are the places that have preserved their historical landmarks for future generations. From the prehistoric Ħal Saflieni hypogeum to the fortifications of Valletta, from the Knights of St John to Napoleon to World War II: Malta is truly an epicentre of history.

I found news of potential developments near historical landmarks in Malta in the past few years to be incredibly disheartening. Just recently, worries about potential development in front of Għar Gerduf in Gozo are deeply concerning. As is the proposed Giardino Zamittello development in Pietà. Organisations and groups like Heritage Malta and Wirt Għawdex have been conducting great work fighting for the protection of historical landmarks, but they cannot be alone. More can and should be done.

I have travelled around the world and have witnessed the negative effects of countries’ failing to protect their history – it becomes forgotten. This cannot happen here. Malta’s history must be preserved and protected for generations to come.
