The Economy Ministry and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry have launched a campaign aimed at encouraging more people to follow a career in manufacturing industry.

The ‘Make It’ campaign will introduce the public to the wide spectrum of jobs available in manufacturing industry, the ministry said.

"Manufacturing industry contributes up to 11% of total full-time employment, making it the second most important employer in Malta. However, the available pool of skilled workers is dropping, with take-up of manufacturing-oriented programmes at educational institutes being low and becoming a concern for both the private sector and the Maltese government," it said.

The ministry said the sector is flourishing and expanding its operations.

"We believe that a strong manufacturing industry is an invaluable asset contributing greatly to a strong and sustainable economy,” minister Chris Cardona said at the campaign launch.

“We want to challenge the common misconception that manufacturing is outdated, dirty, dark, dangerous and solely for men – making it an unattractive career option. Today’s manufacturing industry could not be any different. The industry has evolved and has come to represent innovation and technology. We believe that as people better understand the opportunities available in our own country, more will pursue careers in this industry.”

Frank  Farrugia, president of the Chamber said that manufacturing industry was expected to create 53% of Malta's new jobs in the next three years.

Malta Enterprise is also collaborating in the campaign.
