The triumph of truth has become synonymous with Eddie Fenech Adami and quite often these inspirational words are quoted by people in different walks of life.

For instance in the last Gozo general council session Kevin Cutajar said that when we work together towards a goal the triumph of truth is even more probable as the theme of the council – Together for our Country – suggests.

Where there is truth there is no secrecy encompassing secret accounts or contracts or citizenship or deals for the benefit of the few and to the detriment of the common good.

Adrian Delia’s vision of a caring society will equally include a focus on the common good.

Such a vision-driven policy ensures the protection and respect for human dignity – Maltese and foreigner alike – within a society doing away with precarious work, homeless people, inadequate educational facilities and systems leaving much to be desired.

Proper and creative planning and strategies provide successful solutions that have to come from an honest administration believing in “the force born out of truth”.

A person may have several virtues but it is one’s honesty that sets one apart. This equally applies to a government. ‘Friends of friends’ networks for instance do not reflect honesty.

As the editorial of the Times of Malta (February 20) concluded: ‘Friends of friends’ networks ought not to be considered as an inevitable way of life. Meritocracy is still a reachable objective if only political parties start considering the national interest first before their inclination to feather their own bed to hold on to power. Success achieved through dishonest means is short lived. A classic example is The Merchant of Venice presenting Shylock as having to suffer after becoming rich through dishonest means while Antonio the honest merchant becomes prosperous. Truth – setting us free – always triumphs.
