One of the most popular topics of conversation these days is the link between Malta and Gozo. This link is mostly needed because so many Gozitans have to commute to Malta every day to work.
The biggest problem with travelling to Malta by ferry is the rough sea in winter and the delay in getting to work due to heavy traffic from Ċirkewwa, hence a tunnel was planned to solve these problems. In my opinion, however, this decision was not well thought out. A link is needed for daily commuters but what we need is a tunnel for a metro system only. Allowing traffic to pass through it will cause nothing but chaos in Gozo.
In fact, even now, on a long weekend the heavy influx of cars that cross over turns Gozo into a nightmare. There are traffic jams everywhere and no parking spaces anywhere, even for us residents.
Besides, if this link permits all kinds of traffic many more people will settle in Gozo, which will be turned into a building site, just like Malta. So much for Gozo’s natural beauty!
The only solution is a passenger train or metro.
