What an excellent concept study is Konrad Xuereb’s Malta metro system feature (The Sunday Times of Malta, February 3). Others have previously suggested a Malta metro rail system that connects with Gozo, but Dr Xuereb’s proposal has professional weight behind it.

Perhaps the proponents for a tunnel through which they can drive their car to Gozo and back have assumed this is going to be free, or certainly not more expensive than the current ferry charges. Are we really serious about improving public transport and curtailing the private car?

What have other countries done to restrict the private car, besides improving public transport?  No more free street parking, for a start, in areas where there is a parking problem. Are we expecting too much from politicians to prove their first priority is the country rather than votes and their personal interests?
