Virtu Wavepiercer Limited, a company forming part of the Virtu Maritime Group, has taken delivery of its new high-speed passenger/cargo catamaran ferry, the M/V Saint John Paul II, from shipbuilders Incat Tasmania Pty Ltd.

The vessel began her maiden voyage to Malta, departing from Hobart in Tasmania, Australia, on February 6.

The acquisition and commission of the vessel was part-financed through the proceeds of a €25 million bond.

On arrival in Malta, the M/V Saint John Paul II will be deployed on the Malta – Sicily route operated by Virtu Ferries since 1988, resulting in an increased cargo and passenger capacity.

The M/V Saint John Paul II can accommodate 900 passengers and 167 cars or 23 trailers, equivalent to 490 truck lane metres.
