Roberta Metsola met with newly-elected German CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on Wednesday and left the meeting praising her “pro-European, global outlook”.
The Maltese MEP and Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer met in Brussels.
The German politician took over the CDU reins from Angela Merkel last December, after the long-serving German chancellor gave up her party’s leadership following disappointing results in local elections.
“Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer reaffirmed her strong commitment to the European project in Brussels and she underlined the importance of Europe acting in unison,” Dr Metsola said.
“I found her pro-European, global, outlook important and refreshing in the age of rising populism around Europe”.
Dr Metsola noted that Malta remained a resolutely pro-EU nation and said that it would keep insisting that EU changes “is based on the respect for the fundamental values we hold dear as Maltese, Gozitans and Europeans”.
