Jacques Scerri is the new coach of Balzan FC, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

The Reds have been in search of a new coach following the resignation of Marko Micovic. The Serbian decided to step down from his position last weekend following the team's surprising 2-1 defeat to relegation strugglers Senglea Athletic.

"Balzan FC is pleased to announce that Jacques Scerri has been appointed as first team coach," the club said in a statement.

"Jacques holds a UEFA pro coach licence and did an excellent job in his previous coaching jobs at Pembroke, Tarxien Rainbows and Hamrun Spartans."

On his part, club president Anton Tagliaferro was delighted to have Scerri as the club's new first team coach.

Tagliaferro said: "I welcome Jacques to the club.

"Everyone at the club strongly believes that Jacques is the right man to take the club forward to achieve our targets for this season and beyond."

Scerri has been out of coaching since the end of last season when he parted ways with Ħamrun Spartans.

Balzan president Anton Tagliaferro held talks with Scerri last weekend and they swiftly reached an agreement that sees him put pen to paper on an 18-month contract with an option to extend their relationship further.

He is expected to take charge of his first training session with the Premier League club on Wednesday.

Scerri's first match in charge as Balzan coach will be on Saturday against Mosta at the Hibs Stadium.
