A socio-religious youth group in Mellieħa has won a yearly prize for its work in improving the lives of others within its community.;

Mellieħa Youth was handed the Kerygma Movement’s 2018 youth of the year award on Friday, with group representative Sarah Vella receiving the trophy from Archbishop Emeritus Paul Cremona.

The group, which took shape in the early 2000s and is made up of youths aged 12 and up, organises several charitable events to put into practice what they discuss at their weekly meetings.

Among the activities undertaken by the group are yearly Pantomime and Easter musical performances, dinners and BBQs for the community, weekend retreats, fundraising initiatives such as markets, 48-hour marathons and family events, voluntary work in Lourdes and participation in local events such as Milied Mellieħi.

The group beat Matthew Deguara from Siġġiewi, , il-Grupp Żgħażagħ Corpus Christi, Għasri, Mellieha Youth and Sezzjoni Żgħażagħ – Soċjeta’ Filarmonika Santa Marija, Żebbuġ Gozo to the prize.

This trophy is awarded every year in honour of the Dr Rudolph Saliba who was Kerygma Movement’s first president.
