The BBC has blamed "human error" after it erroneously suggested Theresa May was heading to Brussels for Brexit talks in a Second World War spitfire.

The station’s News at Six broadcast black and white footage of spitfires as the newscaster spoke of the PM’s plan to reopen Brexit talks.

The newscaster told viewers: "Theresa May says she intends to go back to Brussels to negotiate her Brexit deal but EU leaders say the deal is done and they will not reopen talks" as the clip played.

However, the editor of the programme, said later the spitfire clip had been intended as a teaser to an item about a new Battle of Britain museum in London.

Some pro-EU Twitter users suggested it was a deliberate attempt to send a subliminal message about about May battling the European Union.
