Fenech: No lay-off plans at ST
The government is not aware of any plans for mass redundancies at ST Microelectronics, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech has said.
“From the discussions we have had with ST, it is not the case that the company wants to lay off people. This does not result to us,” Mr Fenech told The Times yesterday. The Minister’s reaction came on the back of an announcement by the multinational chipmaker that it was shedding 4,500 jobs worldwide in 2009.
Producers to defy stage ban
The producers of Stitching, a “shocking” play that has been banned by theatre classifiers, will be staging the performance even if they have to “get arrested”. “It is absurd to gag an artist in this day and age. This is the end of democracy, and whoever does not believe that, does not understand freedom of expression,” the outraged director, Chris Gatt, told The Times.
The play, written by Scottish writer Anthony Neilson, is about a couple in crisis coming to terms with a loss, and deals with themes that include death and abortion. It was “banned and disallowed” by the Board of Film and Stage Classification – but the decision has sparked a storm of indignation as well as fuelling interest in the controversial production.

Air Malta in new $100m deal
A new “partnership” started yesterday between Air Malta and Avro International Aerospace with the two companies signing a 100 million dollar-plus deal which includes an order from Air Malta for four RJ70 Avroliners.
The aircraft will replace the oldest four of Malta’s six ageing Boeing 737-200 jets, which the airline is ditching because of the noise and environmental restrictions being placed on this type of aircraft. The other two B737-200s are also to be phased out of service. Air Malta will raise from local sources a quarter of the finance needed for the RJ70s, the rest of the money will come from Air Malta’s own resources.
Avro International Aerospace chairman Charles Masefield described Air Malta as unique, making profit for over 20 consecutive years “and while other airlines were going into the red, Air Malta’s profits were increasing”.
AFM to take delivery of survey plane this year
The Armed Forces of Malta is expected to take delivery of a fixed wing survey plane, a Pilatus Islander, by the end of the year, the Prime Minister said yesterday. It was being donated following talks with the British government.

PM on two-day visit to France
Prime Minister Dr George Borg Olivier arrived in Paris yesterday for a two-day visit at the invitation of French Prime Minister M. Maurice Couve de Murville. Dr Borg Olivier will discuss Malta’s application to join the Common Market with French Foreign Minister M. Michel Debre.
Jobs for discharged men
Dr V. Tabone, Minister of Labour, Employment and Welfare, said yesterday that the number of jobs to be created during the next two years – the peak of the Services run-down – will be sufficient to absorb the discharged men.
US families adopt orphans
Six orphans from the Ursuline Crech left yesterday for the US to be adopted by American families. This adoption is under the auspices of Catholic Relief Services. A CRS spokesman said yesterday that the families are chosen for their stable morals and their financial position.
Woman seriously injured
Yesterday Enriketta Tabone of Tarxien was grievously injured after she was hit by a car driven by Carmelo Apap of Ħamrun.
