John Buttigieg has left his position as coach of Sliema Wanderers by mutual consent, an official statement by the Premier League side said.

"Sliema Wanderers announces that coach John Buttigieg is no longer the senior team coach with mutual consent," Sliema said.

"The club would like to thank coach Buttigieg for his work during the time at Sliema Wanderers and to wish him success for his future."

Sliema's elimination in the fourth round of the FA Trophy against Mosta proved costly for the former Malta national team coach as the domestic cup was the Wanderers' best chance to clinch a spot in next season's UEFA Europa League.

The 26-time champions are currently seventh in the top-flight on 26 points, two behind fourth-place Birkirkara but the race for European football is difficult, given it includes not only the Stripes but also Balzan and Ħamrun Spartans who are all vying to enter European football through the league path.

Buttigieg was appointed Sliema coach in June 2016 and guided the Blues towards the 2016/2017 FA Trophy final where they fell 2-0 at the hands of rivals Floriana.
