SLIEMA WANDERERS 1

Marzouk 42

Mosta put their league problems aside to stun Sliema Wanderers 2-1 in the fourth round of the FA Trophy and clinch a quarter-final berth.

The first chance of the game went to Sliema Wanderers who had a long-range effort through Jefferson that sailed over the bar.

On nine minutes, Younes Marzouk attempted his luck but his effort went off target.

Sliema were enjoying the lions’ share of possession but they were struggling to break down Mosta’s defensive line and most of their chances came through set-pieces. But still they failed to trouble Mosta goalkeeper Stephane Moto.

In the 20th minute, Massimo Sammartino rushed towards the box but his low drive was deflected into corner.

From the resultant set-piece, Mosta opened the score against the run of play.

Juri Cisotti whipped in a delightful assist over the head of Kyle Frendo and the latter hammered the ball into the far post.

Sliema’s reply came swiftly after when Marzouk connected with a corner just to see his header go wide.

Nonetheless, he was not to be denied three minutes from the half-time whistle when the former Juventus player struck a shot from outside the area that went past Moto.

On the brink of half-time, Marzouk almost turned the score in Sliema’s favour but Moto denied him from inside the area.

However, the momentum shifted into Mosta’s favour as five minutes inside the second half, Davy N’Guessan put Mosta ahead.

Rafael struck a long-range free-kick which saw Jake Galea fail to keep hold of the ball. N'Guessan was the quickest to react to deflect the ball into the net.

Mosta kept their skill and structure for the remaining minutes of the second half to knock-out Sliema and register a morale-boosting victory.
