A crew member aboard a vessel being tugged was grievously injured on Wednesday when a towing line pulling them along ripped.

The APL Oregon was being tugged to or from the Freeport by Tug Malta's Wenzina at around 1.30pm when the incident happened, sources said.

The Freeport said it duly assisted by dispatching a nurse to the scene, adding that the issue was being addressed by Tug Malta and the relevant authorities.

The police said when contacted that there were three crew members on board the vessel. One, a 61-year-old man from Marsascala, was hospitalised and the other two, another 61-year-old man from Marsascala and a 36-year-old man from Xgħajra were sent to a health centre.
