Land reclamation

A very detailed study of the sea around the Maltese islands (‘Mediterranean Marine Sudies’, J.A. Borg et al., 2009) showed the presence of considerable banks of Posidonia oceanica seagrass. These run, in varying concentrations, from St Thomas Bay to Spinola Point to Mellieħa and to Ramla Bay in Gozo. As far as I know the presence of such grass has been one reason for Mepa, in the past, to object to any project involving their removal.

A major development that includes land reclamation in an area containing Posidonia is now being discussed. Will the PA now object, or will it change criteria to accommodate ‘progress’ and other interests?
