The Malta Geographical Society has now been in existence for 75 years.

In 1943, a group of academics from the University of Malta, billeted in the country because of the Nazi air raids, started to walk as a group and this developed into a society to study the geography, history, archaeology and geology of the Maltese Islands, as well as the flora and fauna. The leaders took it in turns to arrange itineraries which they studied, producing walk notes and commentaries and, as the society grew, lectures and social events.

The society is a friendly one and many enjoy the company of like-minded individuals, as well as discovering the more remote and interesting areas – an education in itself to many living in urban areas.

Over the years the society developed into Malta’s first walking group, with membership increasing steadily to over 400 members today. There are usually three walks each month during the cooler months. Cultural visits and talks continue throughout the year.

To commemorate the society’s 75th year, 15 trees (one for each five years) have been planted at Ta’Qali with the assistance of the Rural Development Department of the Environment Ministry.
