Ħamrun Spartans president Nunzio Antignani has threatened to withdraw his team from the BOV Premier League if the Malta Football Association or the Malta Football Referee Association fail to take any action following an incident during his team’s 1-1 draw against Gżira United on Friday.

The Spartans were leading 1-0 heading into stoppage time when Gianmarco Conti fired home a spectacular equaliser for the Maroons, sparking jubilant scenes of celebration by the Gżira players and officials.

Antignani posted video footage showing Gżira goalkeeper Justin Haber kissing referee Trustin Farrugia Cann after his team’s equaliser and the celebration sparked the ire of the Ħamrun supremo who labelled the behaviour of Haber and the referee Farrugia Cann unacceptable.

“90 minutes dominated, fantastic squad, an exceptional group. But also 90 minutes of wrong referee decisions to end up with an equaliser in the 90th minute and... the goalkeeper of the opposing team kissing the referee," he wrote.

“We will contact the MFA tomorrow morning and the association of the referees and if we won’t be given justice on Sunday we will contact the integrity office of UEFA and we will consider whether to withdraw the team from the MFA competitions, in respect to the people of Ħamrun, in respect to 40 persons who every day give every ounce of their energy everyday for Ħamrun Spartans FC.”
