French president Emanuel Macron has summed up the EU's reaction to the latest Brexit developments in widely-praised remarks seen as 'hitting the nail on the head'.

Macron made his remarks at the end of a seven-hour town hall meeting in Normandy, in which he outlined what he thinks will be the UK's next steps.

The first option, he said, was a no-deal exit. This scared everyone but the first losers would be the British people. They would have to renegotiate a future relationship without any transition period in a context where, for example, 70 per cent of the supermarket goods came from Europe.

But the French president said he believed the British government would instead seek an Article 50 extension in order to renegotiate a deal ahead of a second parliamentary vote.

"I think that's what they'll do. I know them a bit," he said.

"In that case, we'll look into it, and maybe we'll make improvements on one or two things, but I don't really think so because we've reached the maximum for what we can do with the deal."

The EU won't stop defending European interests just to solve Britain's domestic political issues."

The president argued that the Brexit referendum had been 'manipulated from outside' by a lot of what we call fake news, where everything and anything was said, 'and now they are being told 'figure it out yourselves'.
