‘Nietzsche and How Finally to Get Rid of God’ is the title of Discern’s Benjamin Tonna Lecture for 2019, which will be delivered by Denys Turner at the Old Refectory of the Archbishop’s Curia, Floriana, tomorrow at 7pm.

In his book The Gay Science (The Joyful Wisdom), published 137 years ago, Friedrich Nietzsche first declared that “God is dead”, an idea that he repeated a few years later in his philosophical novel Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

Since Nietzsche never believed in God’s existence, what he meant was that even the idea of God has died. This theme, which resonates in an increasingly secularised society, will be discussed during the lecture.

Prof. Turner is a British academic in the fields of philosophy and theology. He has held distinguished professorial appointments at Cambridge University, Yale University, Bristol University and Birmingham University, among others. He recently published the book Faith, Reason, and the Existence of God. His other books include Marxism and Christianity, Faith Seeking, The Darkness of God, Eros and Allegory and Thomas Aquinas: A Portrait.
