After a long journey, just like that in the Bible, the ‘Three Wise Men’ on Sunday made their triumphal entry on horseback into Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem, Gozo’s version of the birthplace of Jesus.
The Catholic church on Sunday celebrated Epiphany, also known as the feast of the Magi or Three Kings, who reached Baby Jesus by following a star and laid before him the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
On this day, Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.
The trio, whose trip started in Tel Aviv, Israel, landed at Luqa airport in full regalia on Friday and spent Saturday morning in Valletta before visiting Ħamrun and, later, Mosta. Yesterday, they left Mosta for Gozo early in the morning.
As always, they were warmly greeted by onlookers and visitors to the Nativity village and gladly posed for photos.
The traditional ceremony marked the end of the 10th edition of the animated Nativity village in Gozo, spread over 20,000 square metres of land and brought to life by around 150 actors.
As in previous editions, attractions included a carpenter and blacksmith’s dwellings, a bakery, a market selling fresh fruit, fish and vegetables, a tavern, a crafts area promoting traditional skills and folklore, a room of spices and scents and an inn. One could also take a trip along a ‘stream’ on a Maltese boat. The main attraction, however, was the Nativity Scene, with baby Jesus in the caring hands of Mary assisted by Joseph and surrounded by a donkey and a cow.
The event is organised by the Gozo Ministry and the Għajnsielem local council, parish church and NGOs.
