Warren Galea is a Maltese multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. His biggest five influences are Mozart, Charlie Parker, The Beatles, Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix. Galea will release his debut album in May.

In 2014 he was awarded first place in the Malta Jazz Contest. A year later he performed at the Malta Jazz Festival and released an EP with the F-Trio. In 2015 he moved to New York to earn a degree in Jazz Guitar at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. This was made possible after his application to the Malta Arts Scholarship funded by the Government of Malta was awarded first place.

Since moving to the US, Galea has been active in several projects, most notably leading his own trio, as well as performing and recording with Zana Rifai. In 2018, besides graduating from the New School, he recorded his debut album joined by seasoned veterans Andy McKee (bass) and Adam Nussbaum (drums). This was enabled with the aid of the Malta Arts Fund Project Support Grant.

Galea’s music layers modern hazz harmonies onto grooves rooted in genres like hip hop and drum and bass. Across the different textures evoked by the trio runs a melodic lyricism where the guitar is always the singer. Another central element of the music is improvisation and group interaction.

This month he will be touring Reno and California with a new project: Flight School – a septet born at the New School. To learn more, visit http://warrengalea.com.

Galea thanked the Malta Arts Scholarship, the Malta Arts Fund Project Support Grant, the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation, the ADRC trust, and Janatha Stubbs.
