Illegal dumping has been taking place on the coast near Siġġiewi with irreparable damage to flora and fauna, the Democratic Party warned on Saturday.

Pictures relayed to the media showed illegal dumping close to an incline leading to a quarry off Siġġiewi.

While illegal dumping at  Ta' Qali has been halted, it has simply shifted to other locations, to the detriment of our already strained environment, PD leader Godfrey Farrugia said in a statement.

PD noted what it described as the continued lack of enforcement on illegal dumping, with Malta's countryside being buried because of the greed of the few.

The party called on the police to start taking action and enforce the laws, which is damaging protected plants and natural features, among others.

It added that Malta's waste management problem was being allowed to worsen so as to justify land reclamation in the interests of developers rather than look for genuine solutions.
