The Assoċjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi organised the annual Christmas programme late last month to raise funds for L-Istrina.

The most-awaited event of the day was without doubt the Demolition derby which saw the participation of 25 cars who passed the association’s scrutineering process for safety standards.

This 25th edition was dominated by various kinds of modern cars and almost 50 per cent of the drivers were new to this type of motorsport.

The cars that stood out from the rest of the field were the most modern Mercedes E Class car driven by Leo Butler, the Mercedes 123 of Marlon Caruana, Larkin Butler’s Holden and the Ford Consul driven by Karl Mizzi.

The Malta Police Garage and Sport also participated in this year’s edition with a Peugeot 405 car.

After almost an hour of banging, only two cars were still moving under their own power. The Mercedes 123 driven by Caruana and Butler’s Holden.

They spent 10 minutes trying to knock down each other but the struggle came to the final blow when Butler’s Holden came to a halt despite its engine was still running following a face to face blow at low speed.

As Caruana’s Mercedes was the last car still moving he was declared as the 2018 Demolition Winner with Butler taking the runners-up spot.

The day’s programme opened with the Motocross Fun Race which consisted in a one hour long race between nine teams composed of two riders each.

The winning duo were Bernard Sammut, riding a husqvarna, and Ryan Faenza (Yamaha) who placed ahead of Kyle Camilleri (KTM) and Mark Attard (Yamaha.

Mark Mamo, on his Yamaha, and Aaron Zammit (KTM) completed the podium.

Next up was the National Autocross Championship race which was held on a perfectly-prepared race track and saw the participation of 25 competitors.

In the Autocross Modified final, three Opel Corsa cars led the way early on with Terence Azzopardi heading the field ahead of Melo Zammit and Joseph Micallef.

In the fourth lap, Zammit dropped two positions but just managed to make it on the podium in third place. Azzopardi took the honours ahead of the charging Ryan Scicluna, on his Ford Fiesta.

Theo Micallef, on his Ford Fiesta, triumphed in the Class B race ahead of Joseph Spiteri (Opel Corsa) and Ivan Birmingham (Suzuki Swift).

The Standard Class marked the return of Melvin Buttigieg on his Citreon AX. Buttigieg was in strong form as he won the class ahead of Kyle Agius on an Opel Nova and Jerome Peplow (Kia Avella).

The Gozo Autocross Race final was won by George Scerri, on his Citroen AX, with Chris Sultana (Daewoo racer) and Clayton Caruana (Peugeot 106) filling up the other podium positions.

Meanwhile, the ASMK season resumes on Sunday with the Honda Motocross National Championship.

This will be the third event of the 2018-19 championship with the opening race scheduled for 10am at the Ta’ Qali Complex.
