A man was condemned to a one-year jail term suspended for three years on Thursday after coming to blows with a flatmate in Fgura.

Mohamed Omar Bare, a 24-year old Somali national was arrested and arraigned following the fight which broke out on New Year’s Day.

On the basis of the injured party’s forgiveness, the accused pleaded guilty to  having, without the intent to kill or place the life of the other in manifest danger,  injured his former flatmate.

Inspector Sarah Zerafa said that the alleged victim was withdrawing his complaint.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale declared Mr Bare guilty and, in view of the fact that the injured party did not wish to proceed with the case, condemned him to a one-year jail term suspended for three years.

The court further ordered the accused not to communicate with the other man for  one year.

“What do I do if someone challenges me to fight?” the accused asked.

“Report the matter to the police,”  the magistrate replied.
