Two workmen were rushed to hospital after a freak incident below a balcony in Żebbuġ on Saturday morning, the police said. 

The incident happened in Triq Andre Bogdan around 11.45am. 

Police said the 29-year-old and 30-year-old workers, both Qormi residents, were operating a cement chute hooked up to the stone balcony.

At some point, the chute came undone, dismantling part of the balcony, with masonry hitting the workmen in the process.

The two victims were taken to Mater Dei Hospital. by ambulance. The younger worker was seriously injured, the police said, with the older one's injuries certified as grievous. 

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale is leading an inquiry into the case.
