Plans to keep tighter control on weapons
The Home Affairs Ministry will be announcing amendments to the legislation regulating the possession, access to, and use of weapons in the coming year.
“An internal process has started to analyse all existing legislation regulating firearms,” a ministry spokesman told The Sunday Times.
In the wake of the shooting at the Mqabba Nationalist Party club last weekend, where a 31-year-old man opened fire on a group of people with a hunting shotgun, and following two murders earlier this month, questions were raised on whether revising the weapons regulations was necessary.
Jason Micallef given an ‘ultimatum’
Labour Party general secretary Jason Micallef has been given an ultimatum to strictly abide by leader Joseph Muscat’s instructions or face the sack, The Sunday Times has learnt.
Relations between Mr Micallef and Dr Muscat have deteriorated in the last fortnight, as more powers are transferred to chief executive James Piscopo.

103kph winds lash Malta
Furious winds of up to 103 kilometres per hour lashed Malta yesterday morning and the preceding night, and more are set to take the islands by storm tomorrow.
The winds caused an estimated Lm120,000 worth of damage at the circus in Blata l-Bajda, disrupted ferry crossings, caused power cuts and damaged buildings all over the islands.
And as storms continued to sweep across Europe, the Meteorological Office said more strong north-westerly winds are expected in Malta tomorrow.
“More strong winds are on the way, but not as violent as yesterday’s,” a spokesman said.
But it was too early to predict what weather there will be in the New Year.
Short opera season in Valletta
The Mediterranean Conference Centre is set to stage its first ever operas with internationally acclaimed Maltese soprano Miriam Gauci playing a leading role.
The Georgia State Theatre has been engaged to put on the grand operas Tosca on January 10 and 12 and Madame Butterfly on January 14 and 16.

Cliff Richard on holiday in Malta
Mr Harry Webb, alias the well-know pop singer Cliff Richard, arrived in Malta from London yesterday morning on what he called “a rest vacation”.
Born in India, Cliff Richard has been a hit singer in Britain for 10 years.
Earlier this year, he made a grand debut at the Eurovision Song Festival with his song Congratulations.
Another home for handicapped children planned at Siġġiewi
His Grace the Archbishop has authorisedthe building of another institute on the grounds of Villa Mgr Gonzi, the residential home for the physically and mentally handicapped at Siġġiewi.
Mgr Michael Azzopardi, director, said yesterday it was necessary to build another home because of the “numerous cases of physically and mentally handicapped youths, many of whom have been leading, more or less, a hidden life.”
