Ash from Sicily's Mount Etna appeared over Malta on Thursday, two days after the volcano erupted.

Monday's eruption sent a huge column of ash into the sky and caused the temporary closure of Catania airport. Thirty were injured when tremors caused by the eruption continued to rock Catania on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The ash was visible over Malta in photos taken by Jonathan Borg and Ian Noel Pace from Għargħur and Stephen Cachia from St Paul's Bay Bypass, as well as satellite images shared on Facebook.

Volcanic ash can be dangerous to people with existing respiratory conditions such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis if it settles on the ground. Air quality monitoring stations around Malta have not picked up any significant spikes in particulate matter.
